Written for you · The #EndSARS generation

To the #EndSARS generation:From the toll gate
to the polling unit.

In October 2020 you stood up for your life and your friends’ lives. You were peaceful. You sang the anthem. You organised food, lawyers and first aid with no leader and no money. Six years later, nobody has answered for what happened at Lekki.

  1. Young Nigerians march across the country to end police brutality by SARS.

  2. Soldiers fire on protesters. The Lagos judicial panel listed 48 victims and called it a massacre.

  3. No officer has been charged. Victims’ families are still waiting for justice five years on.

  4. Twitter, where #EndSARS was organised, is blocked for 222 days.

  5. A new generation marches against hunger. At least 24 killed by police. More than 30 children charged with treason.

  6. Thirteen people arrested at a peaceful protest in Abuja.

To everyone who stood up in October 2020,

They thought #EndSARS was a trend. It was a generation discovering its power.

You showed that young Nigerians can organise without a godfather, feed thousands without a budget, and stay peaceful under fire. That is exactly what an election needs.

They answered your protest with bullets and your tweets with a ban. They cannot shoot a ballot. They cannot block a PVC.

On 20 October, remember. On 16 January, vote.
